This gas spring replaces the original GM28 gas spring supplied by Lancair for the nose gear on 235, 320, 360 and IV* models. It includes bushings for a AN4 (1/4″) size bolt on each end.
Original GM28 springs supplied by Lancair were charged for 100lb of force, the 700-0099 gas spring supplied by O’Day Design LLC applies 10% higher force (110lb) which holds the nose strut more securely and also improves the useful life of the gas spring.
The nose gear gas spring is an important part of the emergency extension system, it pushes the nose gear down against the aerodynamic forces placed on the gear in the event of a hydraulic failure. All gas springs degrade over time, its important to check for proper function of the gas spring in-flight at least annually to ensure it has enough charge to lower the nose strut completely. It is even better to remove the spring and test it on a bathroom (or similar) scale during annual.
Always install gas springs with the rod end down, this better prevents leakage of the gas charge and properly lubricates the seals inside the unit.
*This spring should also fit IV models with the original type GM28 (no ball ends) but this has not been verified.
